Sunday School begins in SONG!

Children ages 4 through 5th grade are invited to our Sunday School MUSIC OPENING from 9:45 to 10 am each Sunday. Everyone will get to sing their favorite Sunday School songs, and learn some new ones! At 10 am, all children will process as a class to their classrooms.

Two and Three year olds should meet in their Sunday School rooms with their teachers shortly before 10 am so they are settled in before the older children are in the classroom hallways.

All parents or caregivers should arrive at their child's classroom door for departure at 10:50 a.m.

This class is especially designed for very young children. It is hard work just to come into the room, sit in a circle, and listen to a story when you are two! Our caring, patient storytellers will tell a familiar story each week in the Godly Play tradition. This class will focus on seven familiar stories: the Holy Family, Baptism, Good Shepherd & World Communion, the Creation, the Flood, the Parable of the Good Shepherd and the Parable of the Mustard Seed.

Children will look forward to gathering in their little circle, singing and playing instruments, and hearing a story. In the Fall, children will hear stories from the Old Testament and in Spring will hear stories from the New Testament. Each week children will also have a special time to make a craft that relates to the story of the day and share a snack together. This class is supplemented with Augsburg Fortress' Witness curriculum.

Children in Godly Play will hear as many as forty core faith stories from the Bible or church tradition throughout the year. Each class time is modeled after worship time by gathering, hearing the story, responding (they choose their own art response or work with the story material), feast and sending with a blessing. Godly Play is a worldwide, ecumenical movement for faith formation and spiritual direction with children.

As reading skills begin to emerge, children will open the Bible and explore the stories with their teachers. In the Fall, children will hear stories from the Old Testament and in Spring will hear stories from the New Testament. The oldest children in Sunday School have their classtime in the Sanctuary. Their stories are a blend of Godly Play stories and stories of our church. There is a special guest each week from the congregation who will enrich and inform our time together. Lesson material is drawn from the art, architecture and people of St. Martin's Lutheran Church.
