St. Martin's Environmental Task Force
The St. Martin's Environmental Task Force has come together to recommend ways that we as a congregation and as individuals can continue our efforts to be good stewards of God's creation. As part of our efforts, we are looking at using and adapting an assessment tool and other materials from the ELCA. Read more on the ELCA Caring For Creation advocacy page.

Congregational Walk-Through on April 20
Earth Day Church Walk-Through. Norm Hummel led a walk through the church buildings, highlighting some of the ways SMLC is addressing energy and environmental concerns, and areas where improvements are desirable or needed.
Tour Notes: Norm said the church encompasses 70,000 square feet of space. In the sanctuary, everything is dimmable for different kinds of services like weddings and funerals.
Tour proceeded inside the sanctuary and then down to the basement below the altar. The basement is the Mop and Hammer work area now. It has original lighting from 1960. The 3rd organ is currently stored there and the console is already installed for Thom to use. The basement has one of five air handler units. The filters are checked every 2 weeks. These are used for both heating and cooling.
Tour proceeded to the main A/C unit, which is downstairs under the Fellowship Hall. After an explanation the tour was led to the gym. There are 42 light fixtures in the gym and we are using 40 of them. Every 3rd light is on a switch. It costs $15 to replace each bulb. Mop and Hammer uses the lift to replace the bulbs. A big problem is when all the lights are on at times and no one is in the gym. Same problem occurs in classrooms, lights are being left on and no one is in there. There is talk about replacing lights to be similar to ones used in high school gyms today. However it would cost $30,000 to replace the lights and make it more efficient.
Lights in the hallways have been changed to CFL. A/C and heat are controlled by a computer in 7 or 9 zones. Tour proceeded outside to the parking lot. Norm pointed out the cooling tower on top of the building. There is a chiller tower with speakers. Also, there are 2 A/C units on top of the building. Speakers date back to 1963 and aren't used anymore. Pastor Schoss used to turn them on for certain parts of the service however neighbors complained about the sound.
Discussion ensued about the possibility of solar panels on the roof. Norm said that we joined Green Power 4 years ago. Basically, we're buying wind power from the City of Austin. The possibility of a solar screen was discussed. We do recycle paper, using the large bins outside the gym. This is done by both the Day School and the church.

May 18, 2008 Meeting Minutes
Members Present: Carmen Retzlaff, Ted Hazen, Tom Friedrich, Duke Browning, Chris Pasch, and Norm Hummell.
1. Meeting was called to order at 12:35pm by Carmen.
2. Minutes from the last meeting were presented. Chris moved that they be approved. Norm seconded. Approved unanimously.
3. Carmen mentioned that Anita, Christina, and John were out of town.
4. Decision making grid created by John Howard was discussed. This draft grid is a way to evaluate decisions. We'd make recommendations to council. We wouldn't make the actual decisions. It's something we can use to make our decision. How are we going to use this? VBS proposed we buy non-disposable dishes. VBS this year has a Rainforest ecology theme. It's not a consistent message to use Styrofoam. What's our planning process for making a recommendation? "Green Plate Special": an extra $5 purchases one set of sturdy melamine dishes for use again and again. VBS doesn't need council approval to do a fundraiser. Finance committee was made aware of it first. VBS expects to generate enough money for 100 plate settings. We'll help with long-term solutions to the situation.
5. We support VBS to make positive changes to enhance dinnerware. We agree with the goal of moving to reusable dinnerware. We'll work on long-term solution and try to complement VBS. Determine ongoing cost of washing dishes. Who's going to wash them? Where will we store them? These are questions that church council has our will have. Use the grid as part of the process of deciding. See what else you need to make a decision. "ETF has made a decision. Our recommendation is that ... cost vs. benefits, etc." Use grid as backup material when we take our recommendation to council. Ultimately, just one PowerPoint slide to show council.
6. We are recommending being against a CFL collection facility. Carmen will bring this recommendation to council. Ted said there are no other churches in Texas doing that.
7. Assessment: we need a plan for it by June council meeting. Everybody should send all their emails to etf@saintmartins.org. Norm: Energy. A recap of our energy usage. Norm discussed the lights in the gymnasium. We can't split the light usage by area. Replacing the type of lights in the gym can be less than $12,000. We need to consider how much our gym is used vs. cost of replacing the bulbs. Custodian comes in and turns on the AC and all the lights at 6:30am. We need a change of procedures. This should come from the facilities committee. Cost is $500 a bulb for the gym. It would cost $12,000 to replace them all. Original light fixtures in some of the rooms. Use of solar panels: it might be best to wait due to technological advances. We're buying Green Power now. Devices can measure how many kilowatts are being used in different parts of a house. Maybe we could use them at church.
8. Ted: Recycling and Waste. Do we duplex in the office? Figure out mailings? Recycling? These are Chris Baker questions. We don't generate much glass or plastic. There's no curbside recycling at our church.
9. John: Transportation. Ask how do you get to church? Carpool, etc. Bus stops? Dillo? We can get info from Capital Metro. The Dillo route in front of the church will be ending soon.
10. Christina: Water. How much water is used at St. Martin's? When, and by whom? Where does water come from? Boy's bathroom upstairs was mentioned as having water constantly running in the urinal.
11. Chris hasn't had a chance to do hazardous waste questions. Next step on the assessment? We need to see it all together. Compile it and determine set of questions to be answered by each person. Chris Haydon: Building Manager.
12. Next meeting will be June 15th at 12:30pm.
13. Meeting adjourned at 1:45pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Tom Friedrich

Past Meetings
April 27, 2008 Meeting Minutes
Members Present: Carmen Retzlaff, Duke Browning, Norm Hummell, Christina Martin, John Howard, Tom Friedrich, and Chris Pasch
1. Meeting was called to order at 12:30pm by Carmen.
2. The minutes from the meeting on April 6 and the walk through on April 20 were presented. Christina made a motion to accept the minutes. John seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
3. Norm Hummell said that positive comments were received about the Earth Day walk-thru. People learned many things about our church on the tour. They didn't get to see the cooling tower on top of the church as we didn't go across the street to get enough distance. It was a good walk-thru. We received positive publicity. We can think about a follow-up walk-thru assessment. Maybe make it an annual Earth Day walk-thru.
4. Carmen discussed the document "Awakening God's Call to Earthkeeping." It is a 4 study session published by the ELCA and has grounding in Bible quotes from Martin Luther. Do we want to use it as a Bible study for the next 4 meetings? John said it would make sense to use the materials. This could tie in with the SMORES and Junior/Senior High Youth. We need to coordinate with Education folks to see if they have a need. Chris will ask Kathy and Cheryl about a possible Sunday morning version of it. Maybe a June class leading into Sunday School. Christina will talk to Lloyd Haskins about possible SMORES interest. Regarding the social statement, John said we can check to see if it's already been incorporated into it.
5. John Howard led a discussion about other churches in the synod. He didn't find a church with a great audit policy or manual. He had discussions with the synod. A pastor may be willing to come and speak with us from the synod. We need to pick a day and they'll help with an Earth Day-like fair. He didn't see much of a particular congregation taking action or much of individual congregations being advocates. There's lots of enthusiasm out there. Carmen mentioned solar studies done by Triumphant Love. Gethsamane has started a study as well. Duke mentioned that we've identified there's a problem and we want to add our energies toward fixing it. Web of Creation website: John ordered a Greening Congregation handbook and we'll see what it contains.
6. Duke Browning discussed St. Martin's ETF Audit Plan 2008. There are horizontal activities that take place across. It has assessment areas and whom it affects. Involving groups: providing them education. This has analysis included. Discussion commenced about ethanol and how much energy it costs. There was an article in today's paper about the cost of paper vs. plastic. Anything we do to produce energy has a cost associated with it. Christina discussed Green Energy used at her place of employment. Carmen said we can't take two years to make a study or else momentum will be lost. Who's it going to affect? What's the cost and benefit? We need to create a template. Tom asked what we will be reporting back to Church Council in June about. Ideally, when we report back to council, we'll state that we're going to do an assessment by this date. This is an on-going issue. A task force is a short-term thing. What is the short-term action? We're going to do an audit and report with recommendations. Who will be making these decisions in the future? There are 5 categories so 1 person will be the lead on each category. You will need to come up with questions and whom you think will be able to answer them. The assignments are as follows:
Norm: Energy
Christina: Water
Ted: Waste and Recycling
John: Transportation
Chris: Hazardous Materials
Due Date: email list of questions by May 11
Goal: to be done with assessment and report by end of Carmen's council term in January , if not sooner. We're doing an initial assessment and then we'll set a target date by completion. We don't know what the scope will be. June 16 is the date of council meeting that report is due.
7. Discussion moved to washable dishes. Chris mentioned putting in an Endowment Request for washable dishes but time deadline may be too soon. We could do an impromptu fundraiser. A place setting consists of a large plate, small plate, and bowl. These are Melamine plates from Sam's Club. We would need to determine how much they'd cost vs. current waste. John will work on a template. Chris will talk with VBS folks about bids.
8. We will revisit the CFL issue at the next meeting. We could be a collection facility according to Pastor Craig. If John creates a template for the plates, we'll use the same thing for a CFL recycling facility. We could be a collection site for a specific Saturday, for instance, rather than a permanent facility due to cost involved.
9. Next meeting: Sunday May 18th after the late service.
10. Tom Friedrich volunteered to bring snacks for the next meeting.
11. Meeting was concluded at 1:40pm by Carmen.
April 6, 2008 Meeting Minutes
Members present: Ted Hazen, Duke Browing, Christina Martin, Chris Pasch, Anita Salmon, Tom Friedrich, Norm Hummell, and Carmen Retzlaff.
1. Meeting was called to order at 12:30pm by Carmen Retzlaff.
2. Carmen talked about the purpose, history, and scope of the task force. There was a proposal from council/staff about dinner ware that we use and ease of cleanup. Also a Lenten focus on the environment and talk about energy bills. VBS theme is the environment this year. Triumphant Love did a study of solar panels on their building. Synod has an environmental task force that might coordinate with VBS. The purpose is to start with an assessment to see where we are with things and to make a report of where we are.
3. We need a chair and a secretary. Tom Friedrich volunteered to be secretary and was approved unanimously. Carmen Retzlaff is the council liaison and will stay the chair. Meeting frequency was tabled momentarily. Recruiting youth members: Carmen emailed 5-6 youth and is trying to get them involved. Assessment subcommittee role for the youth? We need to figure out what the task is and then invite them along.
4. Discussion of Tasks began. Norm Hummell discussed Mop & Hammer. There are 28 different kinds of light bulbs in the church. If they find an incandescent bulb they replace it with a more efficient bulb. They check air filters in 5 units, plus units on roof and other locations on a scheduled basis. The lights in the chapel have been replaced. There are 40 fixtures in the gym; each one has 2 bulbs in it. They cost $15/bulb to replace. Teachers have been leaving rooms with the lights on and lights in the gym have been left on in broad daylight. The parlor has incandescent bulbs. They're replacing them with CFL bulbs. Lots of costly AC repairs every couple of months.
5. Assessment Plan discussion began. Carmen suggested we start with small, incremental things. Propose with start with the ELCA Environmental Audit Guide. We need to include the Day School and need a school board member to join this task force. Carmen will contact Chas Studor. We're already using Green Power. Only 10-12 churches in the city are enlisted. We could have a web page for the Environmental Task Force on St. Martin's website. Earth Day is April 22. We are to report back to council in 90 days, which will be the 3rd Monday in June. Anita and Chris will take the lead on assigning the assessment and will meet with Chris Baker. John will help with developing the policy. Lee Schnelle is leading a group. John will see if there are documents for other churches. Need to research what's been done at other places. Decision made to hold off on talking to Chris Baker for now. Duke will send an email and elicit a 2-3 day discussion and compile the results. Carmen will email Chris Baker to create an email group with one name similar to what the church council does. Then you'll only need to email the one name and it will be sent to the entire task force.
6. Decision to look at "Awakening to God's Call to Earthkeeping" study guide has been tabled to the next meeting. Carmen will bring the study guide.
7. We will meet again on Sunday April 27 after the late service, approx. 12:15pm. There will be a Church Walk Thru on April 20 with the Youth. Tour is open to the congregation. Norm will be the tour leader and will list interesting points. He can use the old script from Charlie Oertli. John will coordinate with Cheryl Walenta the walk with the youth. Chris will write the blurb for the church bulletin and provide it to Linda Zander.
8. Topic for next meeting: synergy with VBS. Ted volunteered to coordinate with VBS. Look at reusable cups. What can 4-8 year olds do to help at VBS? A motion was made that if they use reusable dishes at VBS, the Environmental Task Force will wash the dishes. Motion passed.
9. Anita will provide snacks at the next meeting on Sunday April 27.
10. Meeting adjourned at 1:45pm.
